Instead of fields of gold, walk in fields of lavender at Bridestowe Estate, where visitors love to get lost among the purple flowers, breathe the clean air and wander through the open spaces of the farm.
Bridestowe Lavender Estate spans over 105 hectares and is the world’s largest privately owned lavender farm. With an estimated 650,000 plants, the lavender rows stretch for 200 kilometres – rows upon rows of vibrant, perfumed blossoms.
Bridestowe grows true French lavender, Lavandula angustifolia – the only variety suitable for both perfume and culinary use. Lavender has been used for centuries in medicines, perfumes and household luxuries. It has featured as one of the most important herbs throughout history, an ideal that continues today through its continued use in healing, cooking and beauty therapies. Lavender oil and flowers are used to enhance flavours in food dishes, to promote health and beauty and even to repel insects.
Bridestowe Lavender Estate was founded in 1922 using lavender seeds hand-picked from France, and each year the plants with the best qualities are selected for cultivation. Bridestowe’s lavender was specifically chosen for its low camphor levels, as camphor overpowers the sweet, musky scent of the perfume. Five strains were selected in those early years, which are still grown on the estate today with the same care and dedication.
When lavender flowers are harvested at Bridestowe, a portion is dried and the remaining flowers are distilled to extract their fine oil. From this, Bridestowe then uses its premium oil and flowers to create a wide range of beautiful lavender products, from skin creams, teas, soaps and linen sachets to its famous ‘Bobbie Bear’ heat packs and lavender pancakes.
Guests visiting Bridestowe Lavender Estate can enjoy all year round unforgettable farm tours, taste its products in the Woodcroft Café and browse through the extensive gift shop. Wander through the purple fields and discover why Bridestowe Estate produces the finest lavender and lavender oil in the world.
