The Cascades Female Factory is Australia’s most significant historic site associated with female convicts. It is located in the shadow of Mount Wellington and was a self-contained, purpose-built institution intended to reform female convicts.
Visiting this World Heritage site can be both emotional and rewarding, creating a connection with the stories of female convicts in Australia and their children – stories that are often tragic, but that also inspire hope and resilience.
The Heritage Tour runs several times each day and offers a guided introduction to the site and its stories.
Even more emotional is the dramatised walking tour Her Story. Part history lesson, part roaming theatre show, Her Story is a powerful depiction of the harsh life within Yard One of the Female Factory in 1833.
The site is open daily from 9.30am to 4pm.
