Cataract Gorge

LoadingAdd to itinerary

The Cataract Gorge, one of the region’s premier tourist attractions, is a stunning river gorge in Launceston, located in the lower section of the South Esk River. Just a short 1.5 kilometres from the city centre, it features a variety of walking and hiking trails, a swimming pool and kiosk, abundant wildlife – including peacocks – beautiful gardens, panoramic lookouts with spectacular views, a suspension bridge, an inclinator for easy access and an interpretation centre.

The gorge boasts the world’s longest single span chair lift that crosses the huge natural basin and covers some 457 metres. The slow speed of the chairlift enables passengers to appreciate and photograph the spectacular views of this ancient rock gorge.

And when visitors grow peckish, the Gorge Restaurant, with its menu showcasing Tasmania’s finest produce, will satisfy any rumbling tummies.
