James Boag and his son, also named James, established James Boag’s Brewery in 1881 on the banks of the Esk River in historic Launceston, forging a tradition of brewing excellence.
The combination of Tasmania’s finest ingredients with the Boag’s pride, passion, superior craftsmanship and equipment quickly cemented their reputation for making extraordinary beers.
Today, the James Boag Brewery still insists on using crisp Tasmanian water and only the finest hops and barley to produce a range of exceptional beers. Each bottle represents the purity and wonder of the brand’s island home, and its ongoing commitment to brewing excellence.
The current range features:
James Boag’s Premium – acclaimed both at home and internationally, thanks to its rich Tasmanian heritage and smooth, sophisticated style.
James Boag’s Premium Light – refreshingly stylish and easy to drink, providing a full-flavoured experience that is every bit as sophisticated as its Premium Lager alternative. James Boag’s Draught – an internationally recognised, multi award-winning beer with a rich Tasmanian heritage.
James Boag’s Draught Light – carefully crafted for full taste and light effect, a lighter version of the immensely popular James Boag’s Draught.
James Boag’s XXX – full of character, this ale has been doing the rounds in Tasmania for more than 100 years, with no signs of slowing.
James Boag Wizard Smith – a legendary pale ale in the English style, crafted from a traditional malt brew and a dry-hopped process.
To fully appreciate the iconic brewery, the guided brewery tour is highly recommended. These run seven days a week, followed by a beer and cheese tasting for those aged 18 and over. (Children under five are not permitted and an adult must accompany those aged six to 18.)
The tours start at the James Boag’s Brewery Experience main entrance; fully enclosed shoes must be worn and bookings are essential. The venue also offers a store and café, which features light meals and Tasmanian cheeses as well as the full range of James Boag’s beers.
