Welcome to Devonport

LoadingAdd to itinerary

The small northern coastal city of Devonport is ideally located on the Mersey River with wonderful views of the Bass Strait Coast. It offers easy access to the World Heritage-listed Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park and is just a one-hour drive from Launceston.

Devonport is the gateway to Tasmania’s north-west, largely due to its role as host to the Spirit of Tasmania passenger ferries. There are daily sailings between the island and Melbourne on the mainland, and Devonport offers great facilities for new arrivals and departures, as well as being an ideal location from which to begin your Tasmanian adventure.

Within Devonport itself there is a small town charm that really gives you a sense of the simple island life the locals enjoy. Its coastal position offers great beaches and a variety of water sports, such as rowing, sailing, kayaking and fishing, are available to locals and tourists alike.

Parks, reserves, cycling and walking tracks have been thoughtfully designed to enable maximum enjoyment of the local environment. Traditional Indigenous rock carvings can be viewed on the Bluff coastal route and, if walking’s not for you, then relax on the 30-minute return journey by steam train along the Don River to Coles Beach.

All that fresh air will give you an appetite and Devonport has great restaurants and cafés offering locally grown produce, including dairy products, vegetables, wines and gourmet foods.

Interesting cultural attractions include the Devonport Regional Gallery, with its wonderful collection of Tasmanian works and the Bass Strait Maritime Centre, which has a large collection of displays and models detailing the area’s early shipping history. You can also visit the Heritage-listed house of former Australian Prime Minister Joseph Lyons (in office from 1932 to 1939).

Devonport’s relaxed lifestyle, temperate climate and friendly local attitude offer the perfect introduction to Tasmania.
