When your business has been operating for over 120 years, ferrying passengers around Macquarie Harbour and along the spectacular Gordon River, you can surely claim the title of iconic Tasmanian brand. World Heritage Cruises began way back in the mid 1890s, when pioneering settlers of Strahan, Harry Grining and his brothers Edward and Frederick took their first paying passengers and began a family tradition that has flourished over time into the world renowned company it is today.
World Heritage Cruises is now operated by Guy and Troy Grining and the business continues to expand. In March of 2016 the family launched their newest pride and joy – the $6.5 million Harbour Master.
There are various cruising options available. The Heritage Cruise sails down Macquarie Harbour and along Gordon River in the morning or afternoon. The morning option leaves at 9am, returns at around 3pm, and includes Hells Gates, salmon farms, a guided tour of Sarah Island, the Heritage Landing boardwalk and Huon pine sawmill. A freshly prepared buffet lunch is provided.
The afternoon cruise, which operates from 28th December to 20th January, leaves at 3.15pm, returns about 8.30pm and covers the same itinerary but with dinner included. And there are three grades of seating options, from standard to gold, although the vessels’ extra large windows mean, wherever you sit, you get a wonderful view of your surroundings.
There’s also a catamaran available for special charters. Particularly popular is the three-hour evening cruise, which leaves Strahan at 6pm.
Groups are catered for – from 30 to 220 people.
World Heritage Cruises won the People’s Choice award at the 2015 Cradle Coast Tourism Awards, and has been welcomed into Trip Advisor’s Hall of Fame. What greater recommendation could you wish for?
