A genuinely family-owned business which has been operating for over 120 years, World Heritage Cruises started ferrying passengers around Macquarie Harbour and up and down the spectacular Gordon River in World Heritage Wilderness back in the 1890s!
It all started in Strahan when pioneering settlers and boat builders, Harry Grining and his brothers Edward and Frederick, hosted their first paying passengers. This was to begin a family tradition that continues today.
Now owned and operated by Guy and Troy Grining, World Heritage Cruises continues to expand. The company’s current boat – the state-of-the-art catamaran Harbour Master – is specially designed for passenger comfort, while minimising the effects of wake on the river bank in the World Heritage wilderness.
Harbour Master, or ‘The Red Boat’ as the locals call it, was designed and built in Tasmania, for Tasmanian conditions and is the perfect platform to explore Macquarie Harbour and surrounds.
Harbour Master sails every day, with The Heritage Cruise which heads down Macquarie Harbour and along Gordon River in the morning or afternoon (summer time only).
The morning option leaves at 9am, returning at 3pm, and includes cruising through Hells Gates, a visit to the salmon farms, an entertaining guided walking tour of Sarah Island, a walk along the Heritage Landing boardwalk through ancient Tasmanian rainforest, and a tour of a Huon pine sawmill. A freshly prepared buffet lunch of Tasmanian produce is provided while cruising up the Gordon River.
The afternoon cruise operates from 27th December to 20th January, and leaves at 3.15pm, returning at approximately 8.30pm. This cruise covers the same itinerary as the morning cruise with dinner included and makes the most of the long summer days Tasmania enjoys at this time of year.
